The Blue Bridge Center for the Delta Arts announces the 4th Annual Delta Visual Arts Show on Saturday, February 25, 2012 in downtown Newport, Arkansas.  The show will open to the public at 10:30 a.m. and run through 6 p.m. with a reception from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  This year’s show features 100 artists from five states, featuring primarily artists who grew up in the Delta, live or have lived in the Delta or who produce Delta themed work.  The visual art covers a broad range with everything from pottery to painting and jewelry to sculpture.  The show’s capacity is 100 artists so, with almost two months remaining before the show, the Blue Bridge Center for the Delta Arts created a waiting list for artists.
The show will be held in downtown Newport at the Iron Mountain Train Depot on Front Street, the Newport Business Resource Center on Hazel Street, the old Post Office on Hazel Street and a new building this year, the Old First National Bank on Front  Street (the John Minor Building).  Artists will have their work on display, and visitors will be able to meet the artists as well as purchase pieces.  This is a unique opportunity to own an original piece of art and to understand how the artist produced the piece.  Several artists will be working at their booths during the show.  The show features well-known artists like Dr. Austin Grimes of Little Rock and young new artists like Lillian Fogleman of Marion, and Adralyn Elliott and Natalie Curtner, both from Newport.
In addition to being able to visit with artists and purchase art work, there will also be workshops throughout the day.  The Delta Visual Arts Show will feature workshops by Arlette Miller on Watercolors, Eva Haley on the Importance of the Value Sketch, Ariston Jacks on Drawing Techniques,  and Frank Plegge on Basic Digital Photography. In addition, demonstrations will be held by Joe Martin in Clay Sculpture and Jeff Ellis in Woodcarving.  New this year will be workshops for young people, with two workshops aimed at children from 4 years old to 8 years old taught by Kris Dunlap and Debra Bennett and two workshops aimed at ages 9 to 13 taught by Dewana McIntosh and Jody Hughes.  The workshops have limited space, so call (870) 523-1009 to reserve a spot at the workshop of your choice.
Another new feature this year is the addition of Art Bucks Door Prizes during the show.  Three times during the day, drawings will be held for $100 to be spent toward the purchase of art from the show.  During the evening reception, an additional drawing for $200 in art bucks will be held.  You must be present during the drawings to win!  This is a wonderful opportunity to come and see the amazing creativity of artists who capture the Delta way of life in an amazing array of mediums.  Plus you have a chance to win money to help you take a piece of art home!
The Blue Bridge Center for the Delta Arts is also hosting a Youth Art Contest in connection with the 4th Annual Delta Visual Arts Show.  Awards will be given in four categories:  Pre-K and Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, 3rd and 4th grades and 5th and 6th grades.  For complete guidelines and contest deadlines contact the Newport Economic Development Office at (870) 523-1009.
MJ’s Art Café will be open on the second floor of the Newport Business Resource Center and will have soup and sandwich lunches available for sale to the public.  A reception, which starts at 4:00 p.m., will offer free beverages to the public and will allow visitors to mingle with the artists and with other guests.  The reception is for those who want to purchase art and for those who just want to browse and look.
The Blue Bridge Center for the Delta Arts project is a joint project of the Iron Mountain Regional Arts Council, the Newport Downtown Revitalization and Improvement Volunteer Effort (DRIVE), the City of Newport, the Newport Economic Development Commission, Merchants and Planters Bank and Suddenlink Communications, also working in conjunction with the Clinton School of Public Service in Little Rock.  For more information feel free to email director@newportaredc.org
