The Jackson County Humane Society is the recipient of a $2,000 prize award thanks to a photo submitted by animal lover Stacy Chambliss on The Animal Rescue Site's Spring Romp Photo Contest with Petfinder.com. The winning photo featured her two-year-old bulldog Mack Dab In The Middle, or Mack, kissing a kitten.
According to Chambliss, she stumbled upon the contest via a link on Facebook where she is a fan of The Animal Rescue Site. "They were sending out notices and reminders for a Shelter Challenge that is currently taking place,” she said. “When I went to their website to vote for Jackson County Humane Society in that contest, I also noticed a separate photo contest that offered a grand prize of $2,000. I immediately entered Mack's photo and waited to see if it would be selected out of hundreds of others by the judges to be among the top ten released for public voting."
When Chambliss found out that her photo had, in fact, been chosen, the call to action began. "This was a total Facebook victory,” said Chambliss. “I only submitted a photo that was chosen by judges. Winning the contest took hundreds of votes.” She began putting the information on Facebook. She asked her friends to repost...and then their friends reposted...and so on. “We received votes and encouragement from all over Arkansas, especially Jackson County, as well as all across the United States. This would never have happened without Facebook to help spread the word and without the amazing people who voted time and time again for seven days until voting closed.” She added, “I just hope everyone knows that their votes did make a difference for the Jackson County Humane Society and that each and every one of them should feel a great sense of accomplishment for all that they did to help."
Chambliss lives and works in Virginia most of the year with her husband, Chad, but has roots in and around Newport. She is the daughter of the late Arvis Glenn Dunn and Betty Pauline Tackett Dunn. He is the son of David and Mary Lou Holt Chambliss. The couple returns to Arkansas every summer, and Stacy began volunteering at the Jackson County Humane Society during her trip home last year.
The Animal Rescue Site is providing $300,000 in 2011 to fund for a year long Challenge. There will be four voting rounds and four photo/story contests. The state prize is $1,000 and the Grand Prize is $5,000 for this voting round, which ends June 19. In every voting round, they will give away $75,000 in grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. The grants will be distributed through the Petfinder.com Foundation. Round 3 of The Animal Rescue Site's $300,000 Shelter+ Challenge begins on July 4. Cast your vote at www.animalrescuesite.com.
