The Jackson County Historical Society's Annual Meeting will be held Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at the St. Paul's Episcopal Church Parish House.
In addition to the election of officers and board members to serve during the year, the Society will also review its programming during 2011, including the July triple celebration of the Society's 50th anniversary; the 100th birthday of the Society's founder, Lady Elizabeth Luker; and the 150th anniversary of the departure of the Jackson Guards.
Mark Ballard, Superintendent of Jacksonport State Park, will give a report on the proposed new visitor's center that will be built at the Park. The plans are under review by the Department of State Parks and members of the Jackson County Historical Society officers and Board of Directors.
Of special interest will be a tribute of the late Reverend James Logan Morgan, Jr. - his life and work.
Rev. Morgan was a charter member of the Jackson County Historical Society and served for many years as its Editor of the Stream of History.
Reverend Morgan was brutally murdered in his home on Vine Street Aug. 19, 2011 by a person or persons unknown. His murder remains unsolved.
The Society has invited Prosecuting Attorney Henry Boyce, a former President of the Historical Society, along with Mayor David Stewart, Newport Chief of Police Michael Scudder and NPD CID Investigator Patrick Weatherford to attend the meeting and give an update on the ongoing investigation as well as hear the concerns of the members of the Historical Society.
A special resolution will be presented to members of Rev. Morgan's family, who have also been invited to attend.
