Garbage truck purchase delayed

The Tuckerman City Council postponed voting on the purchase of a garbage truck during their meeting at City Hall Tuesday night.
During the Council’s previous meeting, city officials discussed purchasing the truck with funds available once balances are paid on two loans the City has been making monthly payments on.  Mayor Everett King informed the Council there has been “a little hang-up” in making the final payments on the loans, but he hopes to have the paperwork completed by Friday, June 26.
The Council decided to postpone the decision until the next meeting by a vote of 4-1.  Alderman Chuck Fortenberry cast the lone dissenting vote and expressed his concern the city is wasting money by renting the truck instead of buying.
“If we table this, we’re not going to have a chance to get a garbage truck for three weeks,” Fortenberry said.  “I can’t see any reason for us to keep paying rent for three more weeks.”
The city is currently paying a private company, Downum Waste Service, Inc., to provide garbage pickup for the community at a cost of approximately $850 per week, according to King.
Velma Turner, a Tuckerman resident, voiced a complaint to the Council about her sewer services to the Council.
“I live on Adabell, and all the residents on that street are having sewer problems,” Turner said.  “When it rains two inches or more, I cannot flush my toilet.”
King assured Turner the city plans to help correct the problem during the next 2 weeks by forcing smoke into sewer lines to locate where rainwater can infiltrate the system.  King also advised citizens not to become alarmed during the process.
“Your house will not be on fire, but you will have smoke come out of your commode,  your sinks and your vent pipes,” King said.
Editor's Note:  In the June 11th edition of the Newport Independent concerning the previous Tuckerman City Council meeting it was reported the city council had approved the purchase of a garbage truck.  In actuality, the council approved a motion to enter into a rental agreement for a truck.  The Independent strives to accurately report all matters and is sorry for any inconvenience.
