Five teams participated in Saturday's Arkansas Police Olympics Shooting Competition which was held at the shooting range on the Arkansas Department of Corrections Complex in Newport. Participants came from ADC units including Pine Bluff, Ouachita and Newport, North Little Rock Police Department and Department of Community Corrections (DCC) in Batesville.
During the competition, participants were challenged to the handgun speed and accuracy course, the five stage speed match and Smack the Smiley, a rifle competition.
During the speed and accuracy course, competitors were given directions as to the number of shots to be fired in a designated amount of time with the highest possible score being 500.
In the five stage speed match, an obstacle course was designed to test the shooters skills in accuracy and speed, with a weapon transition and mandatory reloading and holstering of the weapon before running to the next section.
In the Smack the Smiley challenge, the shooters fired scoped rifles in the prone position from within 200 yards of the target, a sheet of paper with six smiley faces on it.
"The guys had a great time," Arkansas Police Olympics Director Greg Ivey said. "They came out here for some friendly competition and to have some fun and that's what happened."
The objective of the Arkansas Police Olympics is to encourage and promote a closer bond among law enforcement officers of all types throughout the state of Arkansas through athletic competition and fellowship. Furthermore, the games hope to promote a high standard of physical and mental well being among these officers while providing a positive image of law enforcement to the citizens of Arkansas.
Trophies were awarded for overall scores of teams at the end of the day. The first place trophy went to the ADC Newport team, second place went to DCC Batesville, and third place went to ADC Pine Bluff IT Unit. Steve Chamness was the winner of the rifle competition.
