The Newport City Council approved the purchase of a backhoe for the Wastewater Treatment Plant during their meeting Monday night.
Twin City Tractor and Equipment of North Little Rock submitted the lowest bid for the backhoe-loader at a price of $49,607. Four other bids were submitted to the city after bidding opened on June 9 from $55,300 to $59,513. Alderman Neal Pankey moved to approve the purchase, and the Council voted 5-0 to accept the bid from Twin City Tractor and Equipment. Council members Regina Lake and Michael Allen were not present at the meeting.
The Council also accepted a bid from Raintight Roofing, Inc. of North Little Rock to repair the roof of the Municipal Building at a cost of $19,110. Mayor David Stewart informed the Council of numerous leaks in the roof of the Municipal Building.
“The ice storm caused some water to backup on the roof,” Stewart said. “I’ve got a leak in my office and there are several out front. I think it is time we do something about it and not wait until the first of the year.”
According to Stewart, repairing the roof now should keep rain from causing further damage to the building.
“We don’t want to ruin the metal up there, and we don’t want to ruin anymore carpet,” Stewart said.
Kaneaster Hodges, Commissioner of the Newport Levee Board, updated the Council on the Board’s efforts to obtain levee certification to qualify for flood insurance. The certification must be performed by an independent engineering company by May 12, 2011, but Hodges is convinced the city’s levee will meet all necessary specifications by that time.
“I’m confident and comfortable that when we get ours done that we will meet every single requirement that they have,” Hodges said.
The Council also voted 5-0 to reappoint Leroy Mansko to the Newport Housing Authority Board of Commissioners. Mansko’s reappointment was recommended by Barry Pippinger, Director of the Newport Housing Authority.
