A single vehicle accident landed a Newport man in a local hospital Monday afternoon for treatment.
Kevin G. Burgess, 25, was driving an International Diesel owned by B&G Agri when it rolled after failing to negotiate a turn Monday shortly after 12 p.m. Burgess crawled out of the vehicle and was taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle where he was treated for injuries and released.
According to Arkansas Highway Police Officer Bill Oliphant, Burgess was cited for operating a commercial vehicle without a proper CDL license with Haz-Mat endorsement and placard deterioration on front, rear and both sides.
The accident resulted in a spill of approximately 2,000 gallons of diesel into the ditch on the north side of Highway 18. As a result the westbound lane was closed for almost five hours.
While it is suspected the cause of the accident was brake failure, the accident is still under investigation.
