Peggy Jean (Barnes) West passed away April 1, 2018

     Peggy Jean (Barnes) West, 78, of Newport, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018.  Peggy was born in rural Jackson County on July 7, 1939, the second daughter of William “Bill” Conway and Mary Zella (Myers) Barnes.  Peggy was a graduate of Newport High School Class of 1957.  Shortly after graduation she moved to Kansas City, MO, where she married Charles Bertram Myers, Jr. and had three beautiful children.

     Peggy moved back to Newport in the mid-1970s where she met the love of her life, Gene West.  Peggy and Gene married in 1977.  For the next twenty six years they worked hard and loved each other until Gene’s death in 2003.  Together they owned and operated Gene’s Cabinet Shop and Peggy’s Custom Paperhanging.  Some of their work may still be seen in homes and businesses in Newport, Jackson County, and surrounding areas. Peggy loved reading poems about trees, planting and growing trees and flowers, as well as watching birds from her window. Her greatest joy came from cooking for and spending time with her family.  Peggy was a faithful Christian and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

     Peggy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Gene West; her parents; sister, Lois Virginia McDaniel; and her brother, Jerry Wayne Barnes.

      She leaves behind to cherish her memory her three children, Phyllis Moller, and husband, Richard of Harrisonville, MO, Patricia “Patty” Shelton, and husband, Keith of Newport, and Michael Myers, Sr. of Pine Bluff; brother, Jimmy Harris and wife, Annie Barnes of Kansas City; five grandchildren, Tristan Rudd, Misty Myers, Michael Myers, Jr. , Amy Shelton, all of Newport, and Eric Myers of Harrisonville, MO; three great grandchildren, Cayden Jefferson, Shayla Short, and Kaylynn Guthrie, all of Newport; several nieces and nephews; her cat, Emily and her dog, Tater.

     Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home.  Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  Interment will follow at Watson Cemetery.

      Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be Robert Barnes, Bradley George, Tyler Shelton, Timmy Wilson, Gary George and Ronny Rudd.  Honorary pallbearers will be the Class of 1957.

Survivors include children; Phyllis, Patricia, and Michael; brother, Jimmy; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home.  Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  Interment will follow at Watson Cemetery.
