Corp. William “Bill” Cardwell, 73, of Newport died Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010. He was of the Episcopalian faith and moved to Newport in 1978.
Corp. Cardwell served in the U.S. Army for 21 years in the Military Police and retired as a Sergeant First Class, worked for the Arkansas State Highway Police for 20 years, Chief of Police in Diaz for one year and Newport Police for one year.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years and was her devoted caretaker, Margaret Rose Cardwell; his parents, William Arthur and Ethyl Baumgartel Cardwell.
He leaves behind one daughter and three granddaughters following in his footsteps to serve their country. He is survived by two daughters, Alisa Borland of Newport, and Shannon Rose Cardwell of Sherwood; four granddaughters, Amanda Elaine Rose Gray and husband, Matthew Alan, of Newport, Sarah Rose Martin of Sherwood, Allison Rose Borland of Newport, and Emily Rose Martin of Sherwood.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, 2010 at Watson Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Dillinger Funeral Home.
