Calvin Elbert Miller, son of Jesse J. and Gertrude (Hudgens) Miller was born March 29, 1926 in Oxford (Izard County), the 11th of 12 brothers and sisters. He was raised in the Hickory Grove Community where his family farmed after relocating to Jackson County. He was of the Baptist belief. He served his country in World War II in Germany and Belgium as certified armored tank driver. Upon his discharge from the United States Army he returned to Jackson County and married Fredia Mae (Byrd) on Dec. 10, 1945. Fredia was the daughter of Willie and Margaret (Brownfield) Byrd.
They made their home in the Stegall Community as farmers. He is survived by one son, Michael Gary Miller and wife, Kay, and family of Swifton; two daughters, Dianne Coleman and husband, W.C., of Cord Charlotte and Sandy Honey and husband, Michael, and family of Newport. He was the proud grandfather of Mr. Jeff Miller and wife, Myriam, of Virginia Beach, Va., Ms. Tammy (Miller) Buford of Russellville, Ms. Michelle (Green) Horn and husband, Brad, of Pangburn, Mr. Kevin Green and wife, Sarah, of Palmer, Alaska, Mr. Brian Green and wife, April, of Search, Ms. Shannon (Honey) Haigwood and husband, Derek, of Newport, Ms. Kristen (Honey) Blumreich and husband, Paul, of Jonesboro, Mr. Will and Alan Honey, both of Newport; 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.
In 1962 Mr. Miller worked as a route driver for Raney’s Flowers of Newport (Mr. Joe, Daveene, and Mrs. Perle Raney). He later started his own business, Miller & Son Sanitation Service and was also co-owner of Faith & Flowers of Newport with his wife. He retired in 1997 to care for his wife who died Nov. 1, 2000.
He is preceded in death by infant daughter Linda Frances Miller, his parents, nine brothers and two sisters.
His passion and dedication was first and foremost to his wife of 54 years and his family. He loved baseball, auctions, and hunting. He was a sustaining life member of Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a kind and generous man and never met a stranger. He will be sadly missed by his family and gladly reunited and welcomed home by his wife and daughter.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 10 a.m. at Dillinger Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Walnut Grove Cemetery with Charles Vaughn officiating.
Family received friends at the funeral home on Monday, June 22, 2009 from 6-8 p.m.
Pallbearers included Jeff Miller, Alan Honey, Will Honey, Brian Green, Derek Haigwood and Nick Horn.
