As the final two weeks of regular season play come to a close, the Newport Greyhounds show definite improvement from the last year. Coach Brandon Gates has proven to be one of the best hires for the Newport School District. His even temper and calm demeanor are refreshing and enjoyed by the boys he coaches. Coach Aimee McGuire led the Lady Hounds to some pretty significant wins this season and continues to grow participation in female sports. The Newport Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds traveled to Newark on Friday, January 27th to take on Cedar Ridge. The Lady Hounds won 59-40. Leading scorers were # 13 Keria Worsham with 19 points, # 15 Jada Walton with 18 points, # 3 Yasmine Friar with eight points, # 23 Jadyn Brown with six points and # 14 Saqueena Morgan put up four points.
The Greyhounds lost to the Timberwolves 42-52 after the girls win. Lead scorers were # 35 Ricky Stewart and # 10 Tydrell Friar putting up 8 points each, # 5 Cam King with 8 points, # 23 Larell Hardiman with 7 points, and # 30 Scott Ashittino with 4 points. Very little is mentioned about the NHS Cheerleaders who do a fantastic job of supporting the various sports, all the while taking time to participate in those sports. The cheerleaders take an active role in basketball, volleyball, softball and track. Often, the cheerleader plays the girls game and then quickly changes so that she can cheer for the remainder of the night. Thanks girls!
The remaining home games include Heber Springs on Friday, February 3rd, and Bald Knob on Friday, February 10th. Make plans to attend. Games begin at 5 pm.
