Friday, March 3, the Newport Lady Greypup Softball Team opened the 2017 season at Southside.  Although the team came up short, Newport 11- Southside 8, the young team made a great impression, out hitting Southside 12 to one. "For the first game, our bats were on fire. That was great to see!," stated Coach Kevin Pearce.

Leading the Pup attack was Abbie Nation with four hits, three runs and a run batted in.  Hannah Nicholson had a double and a homerun for four RBIs and a run.  Macayle Pearce had two hits and two runs. Emily Jackson hit a double and a single with two runs knocked in and Jazzy Baker had a hit, an RBI, and a run.  Tayla Brownfield executed a bunt for a hit and Faith McCullar walked and scored the Lady Greypups first run of the season. Nicholson pitched six innings allowing ten hits with eleven strikeouts.

"If we can eliminate a few mistakes defensively, this team can defeat a really good Southside team," notes Coach Pearce. "Those mistakes can easily be fixed in practice," he continues. “I like what I see early out of this team. We will keep getting better."

The Newport Jr High Lady Greypups play again on Monday, March 13th in the NEA Jr. High Softball League starting at 6:30 against EPC and then against Wynne at 7:45. The game are held at the Southside Softball Complex in Jonesboro.
