The Newport Lady Hounds travelled to Lonoke for the Goldfish Classic over Christmas break. The team had some great wins in the tournament and finished in 3rd place. Eight teams played in the Goldfish Classic, including Lonoke, England, Desarc, Malvern, Bradford, Stuttgart and Carlisle. The girls pulled out an upset in their final game on Friday, December 29th against England. England had only three losses to date.

The first game was against Bradford. The Lady Hounds won 48-37. Lead scorer was Saqueena Morgan with 18 points, followed by Keria Worsham with nine points, Jerika Balentine and Takeyah Worsham with five each. Bradford was Jerikah’s first game back this season and she helped significantly by getting the ball up the court.

The Lady Hounds lost the next game against Carlisle 59-34. Carlisle actually won the tournament. The Lady Hounds were winning 12-10 at the end of the first quarter but allowed Carlisle to go on a 21-3 run in the second that ultimately sealed the game. “Being undersized really hurt us, along with turnover and missed shots. Some of the best players on the team did not score over five points,” states Coach Atchley.

The final game for the Lady Hounds was against England. The team was 8-3 and the Lady Hounds won 48-44. Jerika Balentine was lead scorer with 26 points and six rebounds. She was followed by Alicia Neal with eight points; Saqueena Morgan with five points and five rebounds; Keria Worsham with three points and eight rebounds. “The Lady Hounds had very good minutes out of the sophomore players. Jerika scored 26 points and Alicia scored eight to help pull away with the win,” states Atchley. “The girls did a great job working as a team and getting the job done, ending strong. I am very proud of them and how far they have come. Winning championships does not happen overnight, but they continue to get better and that is all I can ask from them.”
