The Newport Greyhounds hosted the Highland Rebels on Friday, August 17th. The game was a pre-season scrimmage for the Hounds. By the end of the first half, the Hounds were up 34-6. After the half, the teams played a continuous clock quarter. The Hounds played well, suffered no injuries and proved their readiness for the lights on Friday nights.

Tomorrow night, Friday, August 24th is the annual Meet the Hounds. The event is held at Greyhound Field on the campus of Newport High School. All the Fall sports are introduced to the public as a kickoff pep rally.

Friday, August 31st, the Hounds travel to Pottsville (Class 4-4A) to take on the Apaches as the season opener. Game time is 7 pm. The Hounds are ready to make their mark in 3A this season with 15 returning seniors in key positions.

According to Hooten’s. the Apache top goal this season is to stay injury free. Last year the top running back and lineman were lost with season ending injuries by late September, and two other starters were out for the year by mid-season. Offensively, Pottsville graduated their All-Conference quarterback, offensive lineman Fryar chose not to return after injury to his finger and an All-Conference running back moved in December. Strength is in their depth and experience, and weakness is an unproved quarterback.
