On Friday, August 24th, Newport High School held the annual Meet the Hounds on Greyhound Field. In the past, the event was known as the City Wide Pep Rally. In recent years the name was changed to incorporate all NHS Fall sports, as well as the band. The fall sports include football (7th grade, junior high and senior high boys), basketball (7th grade, junior high and senior high boys and girls), golf (senior high boys and girls), tennis (senior high boys and girls), rifle team (senior high boys and girls), cheerleading (junior high and senior high girls), whippets (junior and senior high girls combined), and volleyball (7th grade, junior high and senior high girls).

The evening began with the posting of colors by the ROTC Color Guard and the playing of the National Anthem and the NHS Alma Mater. As a side note, all athletes stood with their hands over their hearts. Each team member and coach was introduced individually. The large number of athletes wore t-shirts donated by Unity Health- Harris Medical Center.

The evening was hot and the sun was bright, but so is the forecast for the 2018 Newport Greyhound Football season. The Greypups began their season tonight at Greyhound Field against Gosnell. Game time 7 pm. The Mighty Hounds play tomorrow night at Pottsville. Game time 7 pm. Make plans to attend.
