The Newport Greyhounds hosted the Lonoke Jackrabbits for the first home game of the season on Friday, September 14th. The Friday night lights of Greyhound Field fueled the excitement of the fans. The community showed up in record numbers to watch the Greyhounds win 35-14. Each home game of the season has a theme. This week the Greyhounds recognized and honored Jackson County service members.
The Jackrabbits scored first in the ballgame, but were only allowed that brief time as lead before # 2 Tharon Davis scored and # 19 Rolondo Noguez made the PAT (Point After Touchdown [You are welcome Lynette]). The score was 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Might Hounds pulled ahead adding another two touchdowns to the scoreboard in the second quarter. # 4 Monquell Cox and # 2 Davis each scored touchdowns with Noguez’s successful kicks for extra points. The score was 21-7 at halftime.
The third quarter began with the Hounds ready to set the record on who was the best football team. # 4 Cox made an interception return touchdown with extra point by Noguez to end the third quarter 28-14.
The Hounds finished the win against the Jackrabbits with a touchdown by Quarterback # 16 Cash Forrester and PAT kick by Noguez. The quarter and final score of the game was 35-14.
Statistically, the Hounds had 10 first downs, 34 rushes for 142 yards, 10 receptions for 185 yards, 10 completions of 20 attempts and 41 tackles. The Hounds held possession for 24:26 of the game.
Rushing leaders include # 5 Clemmie Alcorn with for rushes for 58 yards, followed by #2 Davis with eight rushes for 55 yards and #4 Cox with 17 rushes for 48 yards.
Receiving leaders include # 21 Julius Clark with two receptions for 67 yards, # 20 JT Haynes with two receptions 48 yards, # 2 Davis with two receptions for 44 yards, # 9 Zaywin Smith with two for 18 yards and # 5 Clemmie Alcorn with one reception for 11 yards.
Defensively, the Hounds made 41 tackles. The leaders include # 32 Julius Pruitt with six tackles, # 4 Cox with four tackles, # 10 Spencer Murphy with three tackles and an assist, # 5 Alcorn with three tackles and an assist, # 51 Zane Watkins with three tackles, an assist and a sack, and # 20 Haynes with three tackles.
Offensively year to date, Cox leads with 266 total yards, followed by Davis with 203 yards. Defensively year to date, # 32 Julius Pruitt leads with a total of 26 tackles, followed by # 5 Alcorn with 17 tackles, and # 4 Cox with 15 tackles. # 55 Alex Emery and # 51 Zane Watkins each have 14 tackles.
The Greyhounds travel to Walnut Ridge tomorrow night Friday, September 21st to take on the Bobcats. Game time is 7 pm.
