The Newport Greypups hosted the Jr. High Hoxie Mustangs on Thursday, September 27th. “Thursday night against Hoxie we saw a lot of hard work pay off in the form of speed and physicality, “ states Coach Mark McGee. The Greypups defeated the Jr. High Hoxie Mustangs 38-0.

 Offensively, the Pups rushed for 290 yards and five touchdowns and passed for 77 yards and two touchdowns for a total of 373 yards and seven touchdowns. Rushing leaders include # 2 Eli Alcorn with seven carries for 117 yards and three touchdowns, # 8 Jadarius Reed with six carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns, # 9 Chris Young with four carries for 45 yards, and # 22 Keyron Childress with three carries for 13 yards. Passing leaders include # 2 Alcorn ( 5 for 8 with 75 yards and one touchdown), # 30 Dylan Braxton ( 2 for 2 with 8 yards and one touchdown, receiving), # 8 Reed (2 receptions for 40 yards and a touchdown) and # 26 Brendan Curry with one reception for 33 yards.

“Defensively, the team played sound and forced several turnovers. The last two weeks, the Pups forced nine turnovers.  The defensive mentality of attacking the football is really starting to take hold and that is very evident in the statistics,” states McGee. Defensive leaders include # 7 Antwon Hardaway and # 32 Devin Braxton with three tackles each, followed by # 30 Dylan Braxton, # 8 Reed, Shawn Alcorn, and # 24 Jacob Gozner with two tackles each.  # 9 Young made two tackles and a fumble recovery.

  Tonight, the Greypups travel to Harrisburg. This team dropped in classification from the 4A.  Harrisburg is undefeated 5-0.  According to Coach Mcgee, the focus this week during practice was to be uncomfortable. The staff put them in situations where things are working against them in preparation for a tough football game.
