Thamail Morgan, senior linebacker at Cave City High School, was recently awarded The State Farm 3A Defensive Player of the Year Award at a banquet in Little Rock.
Morgan, a former Newport Greyhound, transferred to Cave City after being ruled ineligible for the fall semester and played for another former Greyhound, Head Coach Jon Bradley, and Defensive Coordinator Larry Davison, the former Newport Greypup Head Coach.
Morgan tallied 161 tackles in 11 games for an average of 14.6 per contest.  His senior season included 24 tackles each in game three and game 11, a playoff loss to Paris.
As a Newport Greyhound, Morgan earned All-State honors as a sophomore and junior and was awarded the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s Sophomore Defensive Player of the Year Award following a 234 tackle season in 11 games, 21.3 per game.
Morgan helped lead the Greyhounds to within one play of a state championship berth as a junior as he racked up 172 stops, 12.3 tackles per contest.
His three-year total of 567 tackles set the new state record in Arkansas for a career.  He broke the record previously held by T.J. Stroud of Batesville at 526.
