The Newport Greyhounds followed up their buzzer-beating non-conference victory over Batesville Saturday afternoon with a bit of a breather as they ran away from Trumann in the second half to secure a 71-49 conference victory.
Newport’s E.J. Rucker connected on a three-pointer with 1:7 seconds to play Saturday to give the Greyhounds a 47-46 victory. Rucker’s 24 points led the way for the Hounds.
Monday night was a lot less dramatic for Coach Leighton McCrary and his Greyhounds as Newport broke open a tight ballgame, 34-27, at intermission by outscoring Trumann 23-8 in the third quarter for a commanding 57-35 lead at the end of three.
A 10-0 run in the first 2:30 of the third quarter elicited two timeouts from the Wildcats and a push to a large conference win.
Trey Winemiller scored 10 of his team-leading 14 points in the first half to keep Newport in front of the charging Wildcats in a game of streaks.
Newport opened the contest with a 7-0 run before Trumann scored with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter. They outscored the Hounds 10-3 the rest of the way before Damone Robinson’s offensive tip-in beat the buzzer to give Newport a 14-10 lead after one.
Artez Brown, who scored only four in the first half, added 10 second-half points for 14 in the game. Rucker, Newport’s leading scorer, struggled with only three first-half points before finding his game in the second half to finish with 13.
Senior Xavier Rucker added nine points, while Robinson and Robbie Balentine had six points each. Donovan McCrary capped the night with a three-pointer at the final buzzer and finished with five points. Edward Wren rounded out the scoring with four points.
In junior high action, the Newport Greypups struggled defensively with Trumann as they dropped a 51-35 contest.
“Trumann and Highland are the two most talented teams in our league,” Coach Shannon Caraway said following the game.
“We didn’t score the ball very well and we didn’t play consistently good defense. They found angles on us and got the ball over the top of our press too often.”
Trumann led throughout the night as they built a 13-6 first quarter advantage before taking a 22-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.
They extended their lead to 44-26 in the third quarter en route to the victory.
Noble Dean led Newport with 13 points followed by McKenzie Jones with 12.
The inconsistent defensive effort by his Greypups came as somewhat of a surprise for Caraway who saw his team styme Batesville Saturday on their way to a 32-27 victory.
“Anytime you hold a team to that few points you are doing something right defensively,” Caraway explained.
“That was probably our best effort of the season.”
Jones led the Pups with 11 points in the victory over Batesville followed by nine points from Noble Dean. Maurice Killingsworth, Marquelle Killingsworth and Derek Dean had four points each for Newport.
