As kids prepare to return to school Monday the eyes of college basketball turn to north Jackson County beginning this Saturday as the 24th Annual George Kell Classic basketball tournament gets underway at Swifton.
The event, which began as a way to honor Kell’s election into the National Baseball Hall-of-Fame in 1983, has seen the first year’s four-team field expand into this season’s 29-team showcase.
The tournament tips off with 10 games Saturday as seventh-seeded Trumann and 10th-seeded Weiner do battle in senior girls action at 9 a.m.
Corning, the senior girls’ fourth-seed, will take on 13th-seeded Crowley’s Ridge Academy at 10:15 a.m.
Senior boys action gets underway at 11:30 a.m. as the four-seed, Highland, takes on Corning, the 13th-seed.
The senior girls host, Tuckerman, takes to the court at 12:45 p.m. as the 12th-seed and they will take on the five-seed, Izard County Consolidated.
The senior boys host, Tuckerman, the number seven team, follows with a showdown with the 10th-seeded Thunderbirds of Cross County at 2 p.m.
Bay, the tournament’s third seed, will take on 14th-seeded Twin Rivers at 3:15 p.m. in senior girls action followed by another 3-14 matchup as Weiner and Twin Rivers will battle in senior boys action at 4:30 p.m.
An 8-9 matchup will follow in the girls bracket as Southside and Hoxie will square off at 5:45 p.m.
Hoxie’s boys, the tournament’s five-seed, will take on the 12-seed, Crowley’s Ridge Academy, at 7 p.m. in the next to last game of the evening.
The nightcap will feature the eight-seed, Southside Southerners, and nine-seed Maynard facing off at 8:15 p.m.
In addition to the basketball action which will continue Monday evening, an auction will be held next week featuring a game-worn, autographed Detroit Tigers jersey worn by Kell as well as many other items.
