Just 72 hours after letting a late lead slip away against one of its oldest rivals, Batesville, the Newport Greyhound baseball team turned the tables on one of its newest, Bald Knob.
It was not exactly the 1980 USA hockey team’s “Miracle on Ice,” but Monday night’s come from behind victory was one for the story books for the Newport Greyhounds.
The Bulldogs of Bald Knob broke open a 3-2 contest with six runs in the top of the sixth inning and held a 9-2 advantage as play began in the bottom of the seventh inning.
When it was over, fortunately, for the Hounds, Newport erased the deficit taking a 10-9 decision as they scored eight runs with two outs in the final frame.
“You couldn’t write that,” Coach Mark Hindsley said following the exhilarating victory, “you couldn’t write that script up.  This is just an unbelievable win for us.”
The Greyhounds teased their fans early in the final frame as they loaded the bases with no one out, however, following a pitching change by the Bulldogs, a fielder’s choice and strikeout ensued leaving the Newport nine to their final out.
Then the fun began for the Greyhounds.
Travis Linvell was hit-by-a-pitch to plate Grant Black cutting the lead to 9-3.  Kordre Taylor followed with a bases-loaded walk trimming the lead to 9-4 as Devante Neal scored.  Leadoff man Michael Reynolds broke an 0-7 mini-slump with a line-drive single to right to plate Aaron Newman and Linvell.
With runners on the corners, Matthew Duvall drove a ball to the base of the wall in left-centerfield for a ringing double to plate Taylor and Reynolds and cut the lead to 9-8.
Following a walk to Ryan McGaughey who reached on an error to get the inning started, Black dropped a line-drive in the right-centerfield gap score Duvall with the tying run and plate McGaughey, who beat the throw to the plate, with the game-winner to complete the comeback.
“I’ve never been a part of anything even remotely close to this,” Hindsley said, “scoring eight runs with two outs, it is amazing.”
McGaughey picked up the win in relief with a scoreless seventh inning, striking out one.  Duvall started and pitched five innings allowing six runs - four earned - on nine hits an struck out one while walking two.  Reynolds allowed three runs - two earned - on one hit and walking two in one inning of work.
Black had three hits while Duvall and Linvell had two hits each to pace the offense.  Reynolds, McGaughey, Newman and Taylor had a hit each.  Reynolds, Black, Duvall and Taylor drove in two runs in the victory.
