In its third decade of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in partnership with ESPN RISE, announced Caleb Cross of Newport High School as its 2008-09 Gatorade Arkansas Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Cross is the first Gatorade Arkansas Track & Field Athlete of the Year to be chosen from Newport High School.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Cross as Arkansas’s best high school boys track athlete. Cross is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Track & Field Athlete of the Year award to be announced later.
Cross, a 2009 graduate of Newport High School, is a two-time 4A State Champion in the 110 Meter and 300 Meter Hurdles, as well as a two-time champion in both events at the Annual Meet of Champions.
He set a new state record in the 300 Meter Hurdles with a time of 36.99 at the Meet of Champions. He recorded a personal best 14.07 in the preliminary round of the 2009 4A State Meet.
Cross was an Honor Graduate in the NHS Class of 2009 and has accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Arkansas to run the hurdles for the Razorbacks.
He will major in computer engineering while at the University of Arkansas.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field.
