One of the state’s premier basketball talents traveled to Greyhound Fieldhouse Tuesday night to take on the hometown Hounds in an anticipated matchup for the locals.
Jonesboro Westside’s Hunter Mickelson, who played last week in front of Minnesota Head Coach Tubby Smith, is drawing interest from schools across the country hoping to secure the talents of the 6’9” junior.
Unfortunately for the Greyhound faithful, Mickelson turned in only a cameo role as the Warriors built a 20-0 first quarter lead and a 36-5 halftime advantage on their way to a 56-18 victory.
The Westside starters opened the third quarter on the floor but moved quickly to the sidelines as the Warriors emptied their bench in the second half.
E.J. Rucker led Newport with 12 points. Trey Winemiller tossed in five and Wayne Pope added one.
The loss for Newport came on the heels of Friday night’s heart-breaking 60-58 loss to Gosnell.
Newport battled back from a 14-point deficit, 45-31, in the fourth quarter as a 14-0 run by the Hounds knotted the game at 45-45.
Artez Brown hit a layup with 1:13 to go to give Newport a 57-55 lead. The Pirates tied the game quickly with a basket. A turnover by the Hounds and subsequent basket by Gosnell gave them a 59-55 lead.
After a Gosnell free throw and basket by Newport cut the lead to 60-58 with seconds remaining.
Brown’s final three-point attempt was off the mark but rebounded by Rucker whose follow-up basket came after the final buzzer and was waived off by the officials.
Rucker led the way for Newport with 20 points while Brown chipped in with 14. Trey Winemiller and Xavier Rucker had nine points each. Damone Robinson and Robbie Balentine had three points each.
In junior high action Tuesday night, the Newport Greypups picked up their first conference win of the season as they erased a first-quarter deficit on their way to a 40-35 win.
“That was a good win for us,” Coach Shannon Caraway said following the victory, “but it wasn’t any different than 10 other games we’ve played this year except for a couple of silly mistakes.”
“We made some of those same mistakes tonight but they didn’t hurt us.”
Noble Dean led Newport with 14 points followed by Derrick Dean with seven. Daeshawn Harris and McKenzie Jones had four, Kristen Crite had three points as did Marquelle Killingsworth. Garrett Smith had two points while Maurice Killingsworth rounded out the scoring with one.
