Although the official start of summer has just passed, its beginning to feel like fall in the world of high school sports.
With the recent conclusion to the American Legion baseball season, attention turns to fall sports at Newport High School as several are getting underway as the calendar prepares to turn to August.
Newport Greyhound Coach Greg Brannon has announced that his squad is only days from beginning practice as they will get underway Monday, Aug. 2 at 8 a.m.
The Newport Greypups will begin junior high practice Wednesday, Aug. 4, also at 8 a.m.
Coach Leighton McCrary’s Newport Greyhound golf team will also begin next week as their season kicks off Tuesday, Aug. 3 with a two-team meet at Bald Knob.
A historical season will also get underway this August as the Newport Lady Greyhound volleyball team, under the direction of Coach Natalie Hymen, begins their inaugural varsity season.
The program has been playing junior high and junior varsity action as the program builds from the ground up the past three years.
Their season gets underway Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 4:30 p.m. at Walnut Ridge with both the junior high A/B teams and the senior high varsity and junior varsity teams in action.
The Lady Hounds will play their first ever varsity home contest 48 hours later as they host Cave City Thursday, Aug. 26 at 4:30 p.m. as the same four teams will be in action.
Their 17-game regular season schedule will also include an appearance in the Cave City Tournament Aug. 28.
The junior high will take part in the annual Valley View Tournament Sept. 17-18 before district tournament action begins Oct. 16 at Westside.
The senior high district tournament will be held Oct. 26-28.
