The Newport Lady Greyhound volleyball team began the home portion of its inaugural varsity season with a spirited effort against Cave City only to come up short.
The Cavewomen of Cave City swept the Lady Hounds 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-9) but Newport had glimpses of greatness, according to Coach Natalie Hymen.
“I told the girls that second game was by far our best game,” she said, “we battled back after falling behind but we couldn’t make enough plays to win.”
After losing the first game 25-17, Cave City jumped in front of the Lady Hounds 6-0 at the start of game two.  The Newport coach used a timeout which seemed to calm her squad down.
The Lady Hounds scored six of the next seven points to cut the lead to 7-6 and force a timeout by Cave City.
Newport took a 10-9 lead before being outscored down the stretch for a 25-19 loss.
“We’re coming along,” said Hymen.  “It’s getting there but we have just got to play more games together and get some more experience.”
Newport defeated Cave City in the senior high junior varsity contest 25-19.
In junior high action, two hotly contested games went to Cave City as they earned a sweep (25-21, 25-17).
Newport again won the junior varsity contest, 25-19.  Cave City won the seventh grade match 32-24.
