A rough and tumble showdown with the Lady Lions of Manila Monday night sent the Tuckerman Lady Bulldogs reeling as they fell 60-35 in conference play.
Tuckerman kept the game close early trailing 10-6 at the end of the first period before Manila pulled away in the second and third quarters building a 46-25 lead at the end of three periods.
The physical nature of the game reached a crescendo in the fourth quarter as a technical foul was levied against the Lady Lions after she shoved the ball into the face of a Lady Bulldog after a hard foul.
Senior Amanda McGhee playing only her second game since returning from an ankle injury led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points followed by Hannah Kagen’s nine including two three-pointers. Tara Henderson tossed in seven points while Amanda Kendrick came off the bench with five. Katie Dolezal and Logan Riley rounded out the scoring with two points each.
Tuckerman will return to action Monday, Jan. 25 as they host Rivercrest in seventh grade, junior girls and senior girls action beginning at 6 p.m.
In junior girls action, a furious second half rally by Tuckerman came up short as they dropped a 52-45 decision to Manila.
Trailing 17-11 at the end of the first quarter and 28-16 at halftime, Tuckerman outscored Manila 19-9 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 37-35 heading into the game’s final six minutes.
Tuckerman tied the game at 40-40 but the Lady Lions outscored them 12-5 the rest of the way to hold on for the win.
Sara Shipman led the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points including eight in the third period. Liz Winemiller and Emily Caldwell had eight points each while Mallory York added seven. Kati Cloud and Sydney Sutherland had two points each for Tuckerman.
Manila built their large first half lead on the three-point shot connecting on five in the first quarter and nine on the night.
“If we could have taken away any of those in the first quarter we were right there,” Coach Debbie Skaggs said following the loss.
“They shot eight more free throws and hit nine three-pointers and we got beat seven. We gave ourselves a chance. That was one of our best games of the year,” she added.
