Coach Michael Long could only shrug his shoulders after his team committed eight errors in a 16-7 loss to Cabot at George Kell Park Tuesday night.
“We were averaging about two errors per game until we played Kell Motors in the tournament,” Long said as he scratched his head, “since then it has been at least six a game and we’ve lost all three games.”
Those eight errors coupled with 17 hits by Cabot’s Centennial Bank JR. team was more than enough to send Taylor home with a loss.
Cabot scored in every inning on their way to the rout.
“Every time you make more errors than runs you are going to get beat,” Long said.
Cabot scored twice in the first inning, two more times in the second, once in the third before adding three each in the fourth and fifth innings. They finished the game with one in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
Zack McArthur took the loss for Newport as he allowed six runs on five hits in three innings. Aaron Coots tossed 1.2 innings of relief allowing five runs on seven hits and struck out one. Matthew Duvall pitched 2.1 innings giving up five runs on five hits while striking out three.
After falling behind in the first inning, Michael Reynolds singled to lead off the home half. He moved to second base on a bunt by Jim DuPree and to third base on a Cabot throwing error. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan McGaughey.
Trailing 8-1 in the fourth, Taylor Ambulance came back with three of their own.
Duvall drew a walk to start the inning and Grant Black followed with a single. Coots singled home Duvall and Devante Neal plated Black. A single by Trey Dean loaded the bases and Coots crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Reynolds.
Cabot answered with three more in the fifth inning, but Newport came right back with two more. McGaughey led off the inning with a double and scored on an RBI single by Duvall. Following a single by Coots, Neal drove home Duvall with a basehit.
Taylor Ambulance picked up their final run of the night in the seventh when Coots drew a one-out walk. Neal also walked and McArthur singled to load the bases. Dean’s third hit of the night drove home Coots to cut the lead to 16-7.
Dean led the Newport offense with three hits and an RBI, while Neal had two hits and drove in two. Coots and McGaughey had two hits and an RBI each, while Reynolds and Duvall had one hit and one RBI each. Black and Colton Shadwick also had a hit for Taylor Ambulance.
In the second game Cabot defeated Newport 13-7 with Gage Weaver taking the loss on the mound for Taylor Ambulance.
Weaver allowed seven runs on only two hits while striking out three and walking five in 3.1 innings of work. Neal worked two-thirds of an inning allowing six runs on four hits. Shadwick gave up one run on one hit and struck out one in one inning of work.
McGaughey had two hits and drove in two runs for Newport while Duvall had two hits. Coots and McArthur had one hit and one RBI each, while Black also had a basehit.
