The state Odyssey of the Mind competition was held Saturday, April 9, at Arkansas State University at Beebe.
One team, the Newport Junior High team coached by Leslie Altom , Wayne Menley, and Mindy Schulz, came in first place in Division II of Problem Number Three: Le Tour Guide. This team, made up of Zach Altom, Sarah Howard, Lacy Schulz, Rachel Gansz, Bailey Clark, Maci Grady, and Dalton Menley, will be competing at the OM World Competition May 27-31 at the University of Maryland in College Park. Special Projects Coordinator Ronnie Kay Erwin says the students logged several hours while practicing for the contest.
"These kids worked very hard to prepare, and they are very dedicated to Odyssey of the Mind," Erwin said. "They were determined to win first place in the state of Arkansas."
The team must now prepare for the world competition.
"They are going to continue to practice," Erwin said.
Katherine Higginbottom’s team came in fourth in the state. This was their first time to compete at any level which is quite an accomplishment. The team is coached by Mrs. Higginbottom and Mrs. Kelly Jackson. Their team members competed in Division I of Le Tour Guide. The team members were: Emma Jackson, Daniel Jackson, Paige Watkins, Julius Pruitt, Hannah Higginbottom, Amber Curtis, and O’Shea Pruitt.
There were two other teams that competed at the state level also. Nanci and Darin Drury’s team made a great showing in the Division II, Problem Three “Le Tour Guide”. The elementary team members were: Reagan Dury, Riley Drury, Bailey Phillips, Evan Fudge, Carly Mitchell, and Madison Driver.
The last team to compete was the Jessica Rutledge team that received a coveted OMER award after completing their problem under unfortunate circumstances and obstacles. The members of her team who completed the problem at competition were Emily Davis, Alana Morris, Lindsey Lewis, and Madeline Lewis. They competed in the Full Circle problem in Division II.
Support from the school's administration and the community the reasons for the OM program's success.
"Dr. Bennett has been very supportive of our teams," Erwin said. "The community has also done a great job of supporting us."
Parental support has also been crucial to the success of the Newport OM teams, according to Erwin.
Living in a small, rural town may also be a contributing factor to the team's success.
"Sometimes kids in small towns do better at being creative because they aren't in a big city with all of the distractions," Erwin said.
Newport wishes the Newport Junior High Team the best in their upcoming competition at the University of Maryland. Congratulations Newport! The Tradition continues.
