The Newport Taylor-Made Ambulance American Legion baseball team recently completed one of their most successful seasons in years by finishing second in the nine-team Zone 2 Junior District Tournament in Mountain Home while posting a third place finish in the Junior State Tournament in Sheridan.
Zone Tournament play saw Newport lose its opening game to Searcy 6-5 before winning four in a row (eliminating Wynne, Batesville, Seams of Jonesboro and Mountain Home) to reach the championship game.
Newport defeated Wynne 2-1 behind the 4-hit complete game pitching of Grant Black (8-1).  Black also drove in both runs with a home run and a sacrifice fly.
The Greyhounds defeated Batesville 9-2 with A.J. McCoy (3-0) earning the victory while Michael Reynolds collected a save.  Jeremy Goff had two hits and three RBIs, Black had three hits and scored three times.  Reynolds had two hits and scored two runs.
Newport ousted Seams of Jonesboro 9-7 thanks to a 3-run home run by Devante Neal in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Black collected two hits and two RBIs and was the winning pitcher (9-1) in relief, pitching the last 5.1 innings.  Zack McArthur scored twice and had an RBI and Gage Weaver had an RBI hit.
Neal (5-1) earned the pitching victory against Mountain Home as Newport held on for a 9-8 victory.

Texarkana defeated Newport 9-0 in the opening round of the State Tournament only to see Newport fight back time and time again to win two games.
The Hounds defeated Little Rock Continental Express 6-5 and Mountain Home 7-5 before falling to Fat City 9-8.
Jeremy Goff had two doubles and two RBIs vs. Continental Express and Michael Reynolds (3-3) was superb on the mound as he pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits, striking out four while walking two.  Zack McArthur collected two hits and two RBIs.
Newport came from behind (vs Mountain Home) in the sixth inning to turn a 5-2 potential loss into a two run victory.
McCoy pitched into the 5th inning but Black (9-2) earned the victory in relief.  McCoy, Goff, and Black each had two hits.  Kordre Taylor had a huge RBI single in the sixth.
In the semi-finals, Fat City had leads of 1-0, 3-2, 5-3, 6-5, and 9-6 before Newport battled back each frame.  Newport led 2-1 after one, tied the game 3-3 after three, 5-5 after four, 6-6 after five when Fat City scored three in the sixth to take 9-6 lead.  Newport managed only two in the bottom of the sixth and neither team scored in the seventh.
