The Lindley Healthcare and Rehab Center "Relay for Life" team is putting together a three-on-three basketball tournament to benefit The American Cancer Society.

The event will take play March 16, beginning at 9 a.m. with finals to be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 18. "This is the first time we've ever done this," explained Janet Stuckey. The tournament will feature two age divisions; ages 14-17 and age 18 and up with a girls and boys brackets for each division. "There will be concessions available and refs for each game. We're expecting eight games at the most with a girls bracket and a boys bracket. No co-ed teams," said Stuckey. Entry will be $15 per player ($45 per team) and all participants will receive a t-shirt. Games will be 20 minutes each, without stopping the clock. Winners will be declared at first to 12 or at the end of the 20 minutes. In the event of a tie, sudden death rules will apply. Each team will consist of 3 players, with one person being assigned as the captain. Younger players may play up a division but older players cannot play down. Prizes will be awarded to winners of each division and each bracket for a total of four winning teams. "We're looking at gift cards right now," Stuckey said. "We thought about trophies but his would be something you could actually use." Stuckey believes that most people can relate to their cause. "We just wanted to do something different," said Stuckey. "You don't have to be a serious baller or anything. If you can dig out $15 and come sweat for 20 minutes then you've helped and been part of a bigger picture." She continues, "Everybody has had cancer in their family at some point, or if you haven't in your family, you know somebody or have been touched by it in some way. The money raised will benefit everybody." For those interested deadline to sign up is March 13 and you can drop your form off at Lindley Healthcare. "We're going to have fun. We hope to have a good response and people look forward to it next year."
