CASC to honor native heritage
Carl Albert State College will observe Native American heritage month with special activities on the Poteau campus. Events include:
• Cartographer Aaron Carapella will present "Maps of the Past" from 9 a.m. to noon Monday in Room 1220 of the Ollie Center.
• Choctaw tribal member Presley Byington will play a Choctaw flute and demonstrate powwow dancing from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday in the ballroom of the Costner-Ballentine Student Center.
• Cherokee nation flute player Tommy Wildcat, named Flautist of the Year by the Native American Music Awards, will perform at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the student center ballroom.

Transition Expo slated
Transition Expo will conduct Arkansas’ largest education, career and training event from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Fort Smith Convention Center, 55 S. Seventh St. The expo is designed for students, veterans, job seekers and their families and includes an interactive exhibit hall, a guidance center, a dream career summit and the IdeaFame pitch competition. Admission is free.
Student hours for the expo are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. while general attendance hours are 5-9 p.m. The IdeaFame competition will be held 6:30-8 p.m.

Tribe to host college, career nights
The Cherokee Nation College Resource Center will host college and career night events at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sequoyah Schools’ The Place Where They Play in Tahlequah, Okla., and at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Craig County Fairgrounds and Community Center in Vinita, Okla. Representatives from at least a dozen colleges, universities and vocational schools will be on hand. Visitors will receive information on Cherokee Nation’s college and vocational scholarships and on the Free Application for Student Aid, also known as FAFSA.
Doors will open for each event at 5 p.m. and both events are free and open to the public. Refreshments and door prizes will be available. The grand prize is a Dell laptop computer.

Miss CASC pageant slated
The annual Miss Carl Albert State College scholarship pageant will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Hamilton Auditorium on the CASC campus in Poteau. This year’s contestants include Michaela Stacy of Heavener, Ashley Parker of Idabel, Okla., Kayle Huckaby of Heavener, Shaelyn McFarland of Leflore, Kaitlyn Morris of Poteau, Bailey Oberste of Sallisaw, Jonelle Edwards of Poteau, Joni Gullick of Heavener, Emily Mason of Roland and MaKayla Jackson of Muldrow.
Miss CASC 2017, Natalie Cepeda, will crown the winner, who will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship, 16 hour tuition waiver and will compete in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant in June 2018.
Tickets are $10 for the public and $5 for CASC students, faculty and staff and are available at the CASC Bookstore.
CASC up for Aspen Prize
Carl Albert State College in Poteau was recently named one of 150 community colleges eligible to compete for the 2019 Aspen Prize for excellence, the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance in America’s community colleges, according to a news release from the college. CASC was selected from a pool of nearly 1,000 public two-year colleges nationwide to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize. The field will be narrowed to 10 by May, the release states.
"The Aspen is one of, if not the most, prestigious award in higher education," Jay Falkner, CASC president, is quoted as saying in the release, "and we are extremely excited to be included in the Top 150 and have the opportunity to compete.”
ATU-Ozark to add EMS plan in Fort Smith

Magazine Mountain State Park in Logan County invites teachers and students to consider a field trip to explore the learning experiences the park has to offer.
