The Newport High School Family and Consumer Science Department, led by Mrs. Leanne Bradley, is busy this time of year. The Technical Science Building is home to the Department and the Hungry Hound Café. The Café is staffed by the students in the Food Production and the Food Safety and Nutrition classes at NHS. Students are trained and certified in ServSafe Food Handler and ServSafe Food Protection Manager, which are food industry certifications. This provides them valuable knowledge for work in the food industry, both in high school and in post-secondary pursuits. The students are taught the course frameworks for the class. After course completion and certification, the Hungry Hound Café opens to the NHS administration, faculty and staff. The café can also be reserved by the community and civic organizations. The Café opens each year for lunch and has a tremendous community following.

On Friday, March 30th, the students in held a fundraiser for the Easter holiday. The students, along with special guest Mrs. Sherry Bradley, used her recipe to bake Red Velvet Cakes. The cakes were sold for $ 40 each. The fundraiser was a huge success. All proceeds are designated for the purchase of new aprons, silverware sets, and oven mitt/potholder sets for the Family and Consumer Sciences Department.

A special thank you for all those who bought cakes.
