With two road projects underway, AR Department of Transportation’s District 5 Construction Engineer Joe Tranthum of Batesville is carefully monitoring the time frame and financial status of the work in Newport.
According to Tranthum, the bridge replacement, contracted by Tanner Construction out of Ellisville, MS, is in overtime. The contract is for $31.3 million and will probably run into next spring or summer.
Atlas Asphalt out of Batesville is doing the paving project, which will cover 5.4 miles between the Blue Bridge through Newport to Highway 157 over the viaduct in Diaz. The $3.1 million contract is expected to be completed by the end of the year with 115 working days. “We will be digging out a lot of the outside lane and stabilizing it to try and fix the rutting problem.”
Once these projects are completed, Tranthum expects the next to be a patch and diamond grind project on Hwy. 67 from Bald Knob to Newport.
