Each January during the Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet, an auction is held to rename the street next to the Downtown Newport Farmer’s Market at Newport Lake. This year the winning bid belonged to Mary Berry and Clint and Charee Moore, the family of the late Dr. Bobby Berry. The street with be renamed in his honor for 2019.
Dr. Berry was a graduate of Newport High School, later receiving a Doctorate in Theology. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Trumann Masonic Lodge, and a veteran of the Arkansas National Guard. Dr. Berry was a retired police officer, whose career included being Chief of Police in Trumann and Springdale, as well as officer for the Newport Police Department. His greatest love was his time spent in the ministry. Over his 25 years in the ministry, he pastored churches at Union Grove, Cook Springs and Richards. He and his wife, Mary, were married for 57 years.
The sign “Rev. Dr. Bobby Berry Lane” has been provided by the City of Newport and will remain in place for the year.
