The Newport Lady Greypup Softball team continues to play well going 6-0-1 in their last 7 games improving their overall record to 11-2-1.  The Lady Greypups began the most current winning streak with a 3-1 win over Rector last week in the NEA Junior High Softball League. Although the girls managed only three that game, Hannah Nicholson pitched a no-hitter to squeak out the win. Nicholson struck out nine and walked one in three inning. The play of the game was in the top of the third when Gracee Mcguire came in to pinch hit with two outs and knocked in two runs with a shot up the middle. "Gracee is one of those young players we brought in to help us continue to build this program and she came up big," states Coach Kevin Pearce.

The Greypups stayed on the road and picked up wins against Walnut Ridge, Westside and a tie with Melbourne.  The Lady Pups returned to George Kell Park to face Midland.  After giving up a hit to the lead off Midland batter, Hannah Nicholson settled in to sit down the side in order.  In the bottom of the first, Abbie Nation got the crowd when she hit a home run over the left field wall. It was Nation's second over the fence home run over the fence of the season and sixth overall. The Lady Pups won 8-1.  Nicholson, Emilee Addington, Jazzy Baker, Tayla Brownfield, Shaylee Elliott, and Ty Watkins all had a hit apiece.  Nicholson threw five innings, gave up two hits, struck out 14 and walked one. This was a great game!!

Newport returned to Jonesboro to compete in the NEA Jr. High Softball on Monday night. In the first game, the Lady Pups defeated Nettleton 8-0.  Nicholson and McGuire led the Newport hitters with two hits apiece. Nation picked up a triple and 3RBIs. Brownfield, McGuire, and Keylei Henderson each had a hit.  Nicholson pitched her fourth no-hitter of the year by striking out seven and walking one.   In the second game, Newport lit up the scoreboard by outscoring Hoxie 16-5.  Nicholson and Nation each had a home run.  While Nicholson drove in five runs.  Baker, Watkins, and Emily Long all had hits for the Lady Greypups.  Addington secured the win. She gave up only three hits, struck out three and walked five.

"We have been very proud of our recent success, but we want our girls to know that this is just the beginning," states Pearce. "Our team is blessed to have a couple of coaches that have helped us these past few years, Josh Nation and Brett Nicholson. They are packed full of knowledge and teach the girls a lot about the game.  Both of these guys have seen thousands of hours of softball games and have listened to personal coaching. The team would not be where we are if it is was not for these guys putting in the time to help our girls improve. I'm very thankful."

The Lady Greypups play Monday, April 23rd at the Southside Softball Complex in Jonesboro.  Game time is set for 6:30 pm. Make plans to attend!!!
