Senior # 9 Zaywin Smith is the Featured Player for this issue. Zaywin is a 5’7”, 160 pound Wide Receiver and Corner for the Newport Greyhounds. According to Hooten’s, Smith cracked the receiver rotation last season by finding running room after the catch. He wears the number nine for no particular reason but that one of the former coaching staff, Coach Haynes picked it for him sophomore year and he has chosen to kept it each year.

Zaywin began playing football in the fifth grade while a student at Newport Elementary. “Zaywin has become a go to guy,” states Offensive Coordinator Jon Bradley. “He has put in extra time since the spring to become a better player. Zaywin contributed last year at key times and has become one of the guys we count on at crucial times in the game. He will be an impact player this season.”

The Greyhounds are a huge part of his life. Within the team, Zaywin acknowledges Alex Emery “Big-A” as his favorite teammate. “He works hard no matter how hard it gets,” states Zaywin with a smile. As for his favorite on the staff, “Coach Hindsley is my favorite. Many people think he is unapproachable, but over the past two years I have been on his team, he is one of the coolest coaches to be around.” According to Head Coach Hindsley, “Zaywin is very dependable and productive for us. He is never to high and never to low, which makes him a playmaker that does his job. Zaywin has become a key to what we do. I expect a big year for him!”

Pre-game for Smith consists of prayer and listening to music that will pump him up for the night under the lights. When asked about plans after high school sports, Zaywin plans to attend college and become a certified plumber.

I love to ask the featured player what they want the fans and community to know about them. Zaywin was quick to respond that he wants them to know that he always gives 100 percent. “All gas, no breaks!”
